History

Edgewood fire department was established in 1977. The first meeting of the fire department/community club, was held at the fish hook on highway 71. The land (3.7 acres) was purchased by the Edgewood community club for six thousand dollars and construction of the building took place in 1978. The first piece of equipment Edgewood fire department had for fighting fire was an old Army Duce and a half truck with a gasoline powered pump.

In 1985 Edgewood took delivery of its new 1982 Car-Mar engine, purchased by Abbeville County . In 1984 the department converted a used gasoline truck into a tanker truck that would carry two thousand gallons of water. In 1996 a fourth bay was added to the station to accommodate additional equipment and office space. In 2006 the department purchased a 1980 mini-pumper from Conover North Carolina , to be used on grass fires and car accidents. In 2007 the the County purchased a new E-one pumper to replace the Car-Mar

In 2006 and 2008 the department has received AFG grants which was used to buy much needed equipment. To date, Edgewood has two engines, two brush trucks, and a tanker. The fire department currently holds a roster of twenty two active members. Without the generous support of the Edgewood community and the departments members it would not be able to operate and flourish.
